Meaning: | The name given to various kinds of cutaneous disease, which produce in the part affected an abnormal swelling and in the skin a resemblance to an elephant's hide. It is caused by nematodes of the superfamily Filarioidea that invade the subcutaneous tissues and lymphatics of mammals. In the form of heartworm, it may be fatal to dogs and other mammals. |
