Term: flannel waistcoat
References: Treason's Harbour, page 137
Meaning: A garment worn close to the skin to avoid chills. Lord St Vincent ordered seamen to wear flannel next to the skin over the opposition of surgeons who believed that it was not healthy to do so while the seamen worked and sweated, without the chance to wash regularly.
