Meaning: | Presumably named for the Greco-Roman god of medicine, Aesculapius or Asclepius, son of Apollo and the nymph Coronis and slain by Zeus, who was afraid he would make all men immortal. His chief attribute as a god was a staff with a serpent coiled around it. |
