| Meaning: | An acute infectious febrile disease, also known as 'the black plague' or 'the black death' which killed one third of the population of Europe — 25 million people — in the fourteenth century. It is a disease of rodents, mainly rats, but is transmitted to humans by fleas. It is now curable with antibiotics, but can kill rapidly if treatment is not started immediately. |
