Parcel is strips of cloth, typically a cheap canvas, wrapped around an object to protect it. The classic example is the practice of parcelling a hawser, after it has been wormed. The parcel provides the hawser with an additional layer of protection from water, particularly if the parcel is sufficiently impregnated with tar. A line thus parcelled is typically served, both to hold the parcelling in place and to add further protection to the hawser.
