Trinity College, Dublin was one of the universities where Stephen Maturin was educated. Trinity was founded by a Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1592. It is located on the south side of the Liffey in the middle of Georgian Dublin.
During its early life, Trinity was a university exclusively for Protestants. Following the first steps of Catholic Emancipation, Roman Catholics were first admitted in 1793. However, it is probable that Maturin attended Trinity before that date and would have had to disguise his Catholic faith.
