A two-masted vessel bearing squaresails on each mast. While most of the largest square-rigged vessels of the period were ship-rigged, possessing a third mast bearing squaresails, it should be noted that the designation of "brig" refers only to the rigging and not to the size of the vessel. There were many brigs larger than some ship-rigged vessels. For example, at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, the HMS Queen Charlotte, a 400-ton ship, was taken by the US Brig Niagara of 480 tons.[1]
