The reference is to the profound and continuing argument between Roman and Orthodox Christians as to whether the Holy Ghost proceeds from God the Father and his son Jesus considered as a single divine entity (the Roman position), or whether the Holy Ghost proceeds from God the Father alone, as does His son Jesus (the Orthodox position).
