The wardroom was the area where the lieutenants and senior warrant officers messed. It was usually located below the captain's cabin on a two- or three-decker and was provided with a stern gallery. A long dining-table ran down the middle of the room, and cabins for the officers (consisting of little more than canvas partitions with doors in them) occupied each side. Near the stern-windows was a wooden structure housing the upper end of the rudder. The wardroom included lavatory (restroom) facilities for the officers. Casks of wine and other non-perishable provisions might be stored against the bulkhead at the forward end.
