Procellaria gigantea (sic: this corrected spelling, without the redundant final n, appears in the HarperCollins paperback, p.110) is a genuine scientific name, actually coined by J.F. Gmelin in 1789. The English name of the bird so designated is usually given as Southern Giant Petrel; Audubon knew it as the Giant Fulmar and sailors, colloquially, as the Stinkpot.
