Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to the Island of Elba in 1814 but managed to escape and returned to Paris on March 20, 1815. Over the course of the next 111 days, until his defeat at Waterloo and the resultant restoration of King Louis XVIII on July 8, 1815, the Napoleonic Wars appeared to have restarted in earnest and the allies rushed to re-arm and re-equip to defeat him.
