Term: cholera
References: Post Captain, page 92
Meaning: A severe disease of acute gastroenteritis marked by severe cramps, diarrhoea, and vomiting. It is caused by bacteria called Vibrio cholerae, or Vibrio comma — because it is shaped like a comma. It is transmitted through contaminated water and is seen in wars, displaced persons camps, etc. There is a vaccine that is not very effective, and it is fatal unless treated with adequate intravenous fluids. Antibiotics shorten the duration of the disease, but are not necessary so long as fluids and minerals are replaced.
