Forecastle

The forecastle (familiarly: fo'c'sle) is the forward part of a ship, and by extension, the sailors' quarters in the decks below. It is called a forecastle because medieval and renaissance vessels possessed a raised and protected castle-like platform at the bow for observation, fighting ship to ship, and command.
