Channel (part)
From WikiPOBia
According to Wikipedia’s Glossary of nautical terms a channel and a chain-wale are the same. A broad, thick plank that projects horizontally from each of a ship's sides abreast a mast, distinguished as the fore, main, or mizzen channel accordingly, serving to extend the base for the shrouds, which supports the mast. [1] Smyth, 1867 does not have a definition of Channel as it relates to a part of a ship. However, some other definitions in this dictionary refer to the channels. From these definitions it is clear that the channel is the plank that forms the horizontal part of the chains. [2]
