Masts and Sails

My source is neither written nor authoritative, but I'm told that BCs tended to be over-canvassed, sacrificing safety for speed. They also tended to have steeply raked masts -- I question that adverb, since I'm trying to say that the angle of the masts was further from 90 degrees, but part of me thinks it the customary one; perhaps "sharply"? -- for similar reasons. The reason for the raking of the masts might warrant a full article -- or, at least, a big paragraph -- but I don't know anything of the physics of the thing, only anecdotal evidence and argumentation from a bunch of sailors who may have been ignorant or practicing on me. I put this in the Talk page since my confidence on any of these details is even less than usual. (And based far too much on the design of Pride of Baltimore II.)
