Bitts are large, stable uprights of wood which protrude above deck. They are most firmly secured to the vessel as their purpose is to provide a secure connection point for lines under extremely heavy strain, e.g., anchor cables. The foresheet may be made fast to one of the forwardmost bitts, those called knightheads.
