He joyfully learns of her birth on arrival in Sydney in The Nutmeg of Consolation (novel). As a baby and young child, she is very unresponsive to other people, some readers consider this a form of autism. This behaviour causes her mother Diana, to abandon her to the care of Clarissa Oakes and Padeen Colman as she feels unable to bond and be a mother to such an unusual child.
