Many characters in the Canon remark on the use of animal names for nautical items that, to the landsmen at least, have no connection to the animal. At one point, Maturin and other non-sailors attempt to list all of the animal names used for such purposes--making each ship "a positive ark"--though they are generally unsure of to what the names refer.[1] As he explains to Sophia, “There are horses, fishes, cats, dogs and mice in their barbarous jargon; and bears”.[2]
