The Church of England is the established church in England. As such it is the official church of the state. In 1800 it was a Protestant church with a strong distrust of Roman Catholics and "Papist" practices and influences. The chaplains aboard Royal Navy ships were Church of England clergymen.

The Church of England's Book of Common Prayer was the only authorised source of religious observances in the Royal Navy. It has a section for use at sea which includes prayers for deliverance from storms and for success in battle.
