Term: bound feet
References: The Thirteen-Gun Salute, page 188
Meaning: The practice of binding the feet of Chinese women began in the 9th century BCE, apparently to imitate an imperial concubine who was required to dance with her feet bound. The practice would cause the soles of feet to bend in extreme concavity. It was common until the 20th century.
