| Meaning: | Irritation of the passions; anger; wrath. According to ancient physiological theory, there are four principal humours or fluids in the body — phlegm, blood, choler or yellow bile, and black bile. Whenever any one of these predominates it determines the temper of the mind and body; hence the expressions sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic, and melancholic humours. Choler was believed to be the source of irascibility. |
