Term: iron water tanks
References: The Letter of Marque, page 252
Meaning: Around this time, iron water tanks replaced the use of wooden casks for storage of water. Apart from being less liable to leakage, they also meant that seamen were not required to manhandle them, with a resulting decrease in hernias and other injuries.
