Citation: volto sciolto, pensieri stretti
Language: Italian
References: The Ionian Mission, page 110
The Far Side of the World, page 249
Meaning: open face, concealed thoughts

Notes:

Lit.: sciolto = untied; stretto = tied up. Sir Henry Wooton (1568-1639) attributed a similar phrase — pensieri stretti, viso sciolto — to the courtier Alberto Scipioni. O'Brian's version is taken from the late 18th C. Letters of Lord Chesterfield.
