Lord Keith, previously Captain Elphinstone,[1] is an admiral, stationed as Admiral in the Mediterranean in the opening of Master and Commander, who acts a patron to Jack Aubrey. He first encountered Aubrey aboard HMS Resolution just after Aubrey, whom Keith called a "yon wee, snotty bairn"[2] had been disrated. His wife, Queenie was one of Aubrey's tutors when he was a child and remains one of his great friends. He is possessed of a much beloved estate in Scotland called Tullyallan.[3]
