The Golden Ocean was published in 1956. It was the first of two novels aimed at younger people about the Anson expedition. It tells the story of Anson's 1740 circumnavigation and capture of the Spanish Manila galleon from the point of view of a young Irish midshipman, Peter Palafox. As with much of O'Brian's later Aubrey-Maturin series, the book is closely based on contemporary accounts but adapted by O'Brian as fiction.

For more details about the plot, which will contain spoilers, see Summary for The Golden Ocean
