The United Kingdom or the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was the name given to the state covering the majority of the British Isles during the time period of the Aubrey-Maturin series. It consisted of the kingdoms of England, Scotland, Ireland and the principality of Wales.

It came into being in 1801, when the United Kingdom of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) was formally united by Act of Union with the Kingdom of Ireland following the 1798 rebellion by the United Irishmen. As George III was already king of both kingdoms, the principal effect of the union was to reduce the political independence of Ireland.
