Brigid Maturin
From WikiPOBia
Brigid Maturin is the only child of Stephen Maturin and his wife Diana. She was born while Maturin was at sea during the period of The Thirteen-Gun Salute. He joyfully learns of her birth on arrival in Sydney in The Nutmeg of Consolation (novel). As a baby and young child, she is very unresponsive to other people, some readers consider this a form of autism. This behaviour causes her mother Diana, to abandon her to the care of Clarissa Oakes and Padeen Colman as she feels unable to bond and be a mother to such an unusual child.
Under Padeen's care, she learns to speak Irish and she starts to develop into a bright and friendly child. She particularly enjoys sea voyages.
