Term: aorta severed at the crest of the arch
References: Desolation Island, page 215
Meaning: The aorta exits the heart towards the head, then curves downward to the left. The curved portion is the aortic arch, and three vessels arise from it, to serve the head and upper part of the body. If severed at the crest, all of the body with the exception of the right side of the head and the right upper extremity would be deprived of blood, but that is moot since the patient would bleed to death in a few moments.
