Portsmouth is a city on the south coast of England. Portsmouth's primary claim to fame is as a naval port. It is located mainly on Portsea Island. It is 64 miles (103 km) south west from London.

Portsmouth is home to the world's oldest dry dock still in use and also home to some famous ships, including HMS Warrior, the Mary Rose and Lord Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory. The naval base remains a major dockyard headquarters for the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Commandos. Its 2001 population was 186,700.

According to the 1801 census, Portsmouth had 5310 dwellings and a population of 32,160. In 1811, it had grown to hold 6852 dwellings and a population of 40,567.
